The Walk of Life 2015!
In association with the Cardiac Health Foundation of Canada, Southlake’s Cardiovascular Prevention & Rehabilitation Program hosted its 8th annual Southlake Walk of Life fundraising walkathon. A total of 193 participants collected pledges and walked the track at the Newmarket Magna Centre, raising $53,000 to support the development of our new Heartworks Alumni program. Mayor Van Bynen and Hospital CEO Dr. Williams were in attendance to kick-off the event! Zumba dancers led the group in a Jerry Lee Lewis inspired warm-up, and DJ Wayne Jones kept the fun going with party music. Each participant received a Walk of Life t-shirt and refreshments. To date this event has raised over $250 000!
Over 8,000 people from our community turn to Southlake for advanced cardiac care every year. The Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation program aims to educate and mobilize many of these individuals with the skills, tools and confidence necessary to reduce their risk of heart attack and stroke. Those at risk for a cardiac incident who complete a cardiovascular rehabilitation program may decrease the likelihood of life-threatening consequences by as much as 50%! Funds raised through the Southlake Walk of Life will impact the ability to successfully educate the community about cardiovascular related diseases and treatments.
The Heartworks Alumni Program is a new initiative aimed at supporting our cardiovascular rehabilitation participants beyond their program graduation! In order to keep benefitting from the gains made throughout the program, heart-healthy lifestyle choices need to continue as a way of life! The funds raised will go towards the development of a web-portal designed to keep former patients engaged in heart-healthy behaviours, receive timely education and stay connected with their heart healthy community.
Past fund raising initiatives have gone toward the program for such equipment as:
LearningWare software, TV monitor, Library shelving, Lockers, Bio-electrical impedance Scale, treadmills, mobile Blood Pressure units, stress testing treadmill and computer stations, cardiopulmonary exercise testing stations.
